A bit of background.

I began practicing instructional design well before I was familiar with the term.

Early on, as a design and marketing professional, I felt a sense of accomplishment in helping to translate a client's offering into meaningful communication. Early publishing technologies, which helped to streamline the design and development process, also offered a means to explore various creative options to further refine the message and test efficacy. Later, as I became more fluent with the tools, technology became an integral part of the communication—interactivity and visual design went hand-in-hand to create an immersive experience for the user.

I was hooked.

Creative Perspectives, the agency I founded, offered a unique set of multimedia development services: technology demonstrations, simulations, and interactive learning programs. Technology was no longer just a means to an end, it became part of the overall deliverable. More importantly, that deliverable could help people understand new concepts and see things differently. Through thoughtful observation, research, and developed expertise, I learned what worked in the context of learning and why. Instructional design became a natural extension of pursuing the goal of creating effective communications that resonated with an audience - one that resulted in acquiring new knowledge or improving skills.

Over the course of my career, I’ve had the opportunity to put my hand to over 60 different training programs that have ranged in scale, scope, and domain. While technology has evolved significantly, my sense of what is important has remained constant - in order to be effective, learning must be meaningful, memorable, and measurable.
